As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Shelbourne has advanced training in anesthesia, allowing him to perform procedures safely in the comfort of an outpatient office setting. Alongside Dr.Shelbourne are his highly qualified surgical assistants. Our assistants are certified as OMFS anesthesia assistants, which requires an understanding of basic sciences, patient evaluation and preparation, anesthetic drugs and techniques, monitoring, and emergency procedures. We congratulate them for also maintaining certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Both of these certifications indicate our staff”s ability to provide a higher level of care for our patients.
Courtney W. Shelbourne, DMD
Educated at the Medical University of South Carolina and Yale-New Haven Hospital, Dr. Shelbourne is board certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. His residency training stressed anesthesia/pain control for both children and adults, removal of wisdom teeth, soft and hard tissue reconstruction for dental/facial implants, corrective jaw surgery for children and adults, facial trauma repair and reconstruction, and evaluation and treatment of various oral pathology and TMJ disorders.
Although extensively trained in the broad scope of oral & maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Shelbourne’s greatest interest is in the removal of wisdom teeth, reconstruction of the oral cavity/face with dental implants, and treatment of oral pathology while using the most modern and safe methods for anesthesia and pain control. Using the most sophisticated 3D imaging equipment available, he also enjoys 3D diagnostic evaluation of facial/oral pathology or problems.
Dr. Shelbourne prides himself on using the Nobel Biocare Dental Implant system, a leader in the the dental implant industry. And continues to perform more All-on-4 procedures than any other surgeon in South Carolina. Being the first surgeon in South Carolina certified to place the zygomatic implant, he is able to provide a level of care to patients with severe bone loss. This passion for learning takes him to seminars all over the world where he learns minimally invasive techniques to benefit the patient as well as the restorative doctor. Dr. Shelbourne’s patients enjoy his comforting bedside manner and enjoyable sense of humor.
In order to serve the Charleston area, Dr. Shelbourne has hospital privileges at Roper Hospital, St. Francis hospital, and East Cooper Regional Medical Center. Since starting his private practice in 2001, he maintains an active continuing education schedule and is an active member in multiple dental societies.
Dr. Shelbourne enjoys spending weekends on the water with his wife and children. He is also an active volunteer in the community, and is strongly committed to improving the lives of orphans and at-risk children.
